Yurika Sunada

It is a long-standing fascination with the intricate mechanisms of human perception that actuates the weaving together of movement, light and sound into the multifaceted installations that compose my work. Ever since I can remember, I have had a curiosity for form and obsessed with its precision. But in this pursuit of perfection, I simultaneously committed myself to continuous and irrefutable failure.

These early toils laid the foundation for the kinetic sculptures I produce today. They had fortuitously fostered a curiosity for the imperfect, my untrustworthy perceptive senses in particular. It is in an attempt to better understand, and finally acknowledge these shortcomings, that most of my sculptures lend shape and movement to the myriad of trifling matters that comprise a daily life. My work situates itself amidst their contradictory gaps - between perfection and acceptance, memory and forgetfulness, perception and misconception. And although they are meticulously cultivated on these introspective ruminations, my ambition is not only to grant an audience the access to my qualia, but to invite a reimagining of one’s own.
